During the complimentary orthodontic examination, Dr. Mertz will discuss concerns you have about you or your child’s teeth and will take time to answer any questions you have about braces.

For children, Dr. Mertz will evaluate whether it is time to begin treatment, or if treatment should be delayed until more permanent teeth erupt. When treatment is indicated, the next step will be gathering orthodontic records, including patient photos, dental scans, and x-rays.

Early orthodontic treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all kids have an evaluation by an orthodontic specialist by the age of 7. Some problems are easier to correct when found early and delaying treatment may lead to extended treatment times, cause potential problems to get worse and limit results. Phase I treatment helps develop facial growth, correct harmful habits, improve your child’s self confidence and guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position.

“Self-ligating” braces & clear aligners

At GPO we use a technologically advanced bracket system that has little doors to hold the wire in place, not needing the little colored ties. These brackets accumulate less plaque and move teeth more efficiently – requiring fewer trips into the office. But don’t worry! If you want to pick out fun colors, we still place the colored ties as long as your teeth are nice and clean!!

No goop in our office! Our 3Shape Trios 5 scanner is the most advanced on the market and takes 2,400 photo frames per second, creating a precise 3D image of your teeth that we can then send to our 3D printer. With the use of this technology, Dr. Mertz can customize treatments efficiently and effectively to fit your lifestyle.

Digital x-rays are necessary to evaluate the health of your teeth and facial bones. These x-rays use less radiation. In fact, when a panorex x-ray is taken to evaluate teeth roots or eruption patterns, the patient is exposed to the same about of radiation as being outside for the day!

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ or TMD) are difficult to diagnose and treat because there are so many contributing factors. During periods of stress, TMJ symptoms increase in severity, most likely due to clenching the jaw muscles and nighttime grinding. Along with occlusal guards (bitesplints) Dr. Mertz uses Botox to help reduce muscle pain associated with TMJ.
